Post 2: Using The Wind To Get To The Clouds

1125827_globe_earth_3ok...Today went well again.  I started out my day checking and responding to emails then creating a short list of Cloud Apps for some people in my school district.  The same list that is in my most recent post, Post 1:  Using the Wind To Get To The Clouds. It now seems that they are interested in exploring this as an option to replace our current.  As a school based Technology Coordinator in my school district this makes me extremely happy.  I started using a few Cloud Apps suchs Google Docs about three years ago with my Media Production class.  Using a real-time-multi-user-editing application was not only functional but practical for things like schedules and scripts.  So, my schools district is interested in Cloud Apps but one of their major reservation is a security issue.  Over the next few weeks I will now hopefully be posting and reading from my blog contributers more about possible solutions and suggestions about how to handle security policies.

After answering my emails I decided to download the lates version of Google Earth.  To see how the Wind works with some Open Source stand-apps.  The newest version, 5.0, is awesome.  Amoung the newest features is the ability dive into the depths of any ocean.  Now you are not swimming with the fish but you are able to observe topography and naviagte around.   I think this would be a great opportunity to teach students to embed videos into their Google Earth tours.  For example:  my 3rd and 4th grade students study Australia and the can now pull a short video clip down from Discovery Streaming and embed it into their Great Barrier Reef placemark.  Overall, the newest version is great and it the graphics and speed are as good on the Wind Netbook.
