What a great day today. I was at a district workshop for technology integration into core subject areas. Today it was for Math and Science. Well, we were using Logger Pro and all the different accessories for collecting data from several sources. So, to make a long story short you can also purchase a hand-held device that will allow you to collect and analyze data in the field. It would just be cumbersome to take your full-on laptop into the field with all the potential in the world to have it damaged. The hand-held , Lab Quest, is in the neighborhood of $350+. This seems like a great place to substitute the MSI Wind as the tool for the field.
As I sit here with an amazing Science teacher from my school I begin to pitch it to him. He loves it! He is ready to start writing grants for the ability to have netbooks accessible to the students. I am prepared for a bit of a bumpy road in acquiring teacher buy-in, but it may not be as bad as I am thinking. With forward teachers like the one I mentioned earlier in this post it is clear that Netbooks and On-Demand computing (Cloud Computing) are a few of the tools that education has been waiting for to make their lives easier while refocusing our amazing energy on the true job at hand, education. To take a quote from an educator that I admire and have heard speak on many occassions, Steve Van Metre. "We are the Bearers of the Map, the Keeper of the Tools, and the Starmakers." -Steve Van Metre

Jon - another cool post! I really am enjoying following your progress with the MSI Wind Netbook.
Question for ya - in terms of using Cloud Apps - what options are available for broadband wireless that are sufficient for Cloud Apps? Is there any way of combining the Broadband Wireless expense and say, a cell phone bill or something?
Also - I think you are right about the teacher buy-in. If you can find the BENEFIT (not the features) that matter to a particular teacher, you will get their support. Remember, people do not buy a hammer because they want a hammer. They buy a hammer to drive a nail.

My MSI Wind Notebook cannot connect to the wireless LAN at the Office. It can detect the wireless signal but cannot get IP Address.

Most companies use MAC ID filtering for their wireless networks. If you computer's ID is not registered, you will not be allowed on the network.

The Windows drivers that come with it don't work - I had this same problem with my sister's Wind before I put Xubuntu on it. You can check for newer versions of your drivers here.

I had the same exact issue. I could see the wi-fi signal and could input the password to get into the network but it would not connect. I did what the following website suggested and it fixed the problem!
